They are also true global satellites whereas SAS is only at the equator. So to do global communication SAS will rely heavily on transfer to terrestrial channels.
It is important to note that any basic functions, like text, calls and whatever else can be done through data connection. In fact, that is how it works ubiquitiously these days. People these days uses whatsapp, kakaotalk, line, etc to do everything and they only require very little data connections.
So yes, SAS is going to be competing with everyone operating in the same space. Whether or not SAS fails depend on whether or not there would be a telco that would be prepared to rent the satellites and relay data through them. If potential telco partners decided that it wouldnt be profitable then they will not rent the satellite and SAS will be absolutely dead in the water.
SAS business model is cable in space and that is it. It is unlike global satellites.
SAS customer base MUST BE PEOPLE IN THE REMOTE COMMUNITIES and they have no choice in that. Even then they would then have to compete with spacex, irridium, oneweb, etc. Anyone who isn't in a remote place are already well served by mobile towers and cables. I am absolutely certain of this.
