Nearly 70 million tonnes of brown coal are mined per yr in Australia.

Nearly 99% c/- Latrobe valley.

There are 1300 yrs of the resource left at current usage from extant but not complete jorc.

There is no money in the process of mining brown coal if we are to believe the power stations that produce it for less than a dollar per tonne.

Every state and territory of Australia has some brown coal deposits. But only the Valley has proven to be commercially viable.

How do you make money out of brown coal ? a substance that reacts with air and potentially self combusts within 48hrs of being disturbed due to partial aeration when stockpiled ?

The Loy Yang stockpile is kept at a constant 70,000 tonnes,,Loy Yang uses around 100,000 tonnes a day.


Hazelwood's exhaust pipe sniffer shows emmisions of 1.37 Tonnes of CO2 per Mw, and unless it is targeted ( it is currently short listed ) by the Fed govt for early closure, was planned to stay commissioned until 2031

Loy Yang stations ( B being supposedly the cleanest of all LV staions ) are the largest polluters by volume,with around 30 million tonnes mined from it's pit per yr,, but according to Stats on Wiki it seems to show emissions of 1.4 tonnes per Mw,,, confusing stuff indeed,,, especially with Aluminium smelting being Victoria's Largest export industry, heavily subsidized and locked in until 2036.

Got me stumped. Anyone have accurate figures for LY emissions ?
