Urea (fertilizer) to be produced from coal

    (15-11-2005)

HA NOI — The Chinese Hubei Yihua Chemical Company recently received the Ministry of Industry’s approval to build a new plant to produce urea fertiliser from coal in the northern port city of Hai Phong.

To date, the country has two urea fertiliser plants, including the Ha Bac Fertiliser Plant with a capacity of 160,000 tonnes per year, and the Fertiliser and Petroleum Chemical Plant with an annual capacity of 740,000 tonnes. However, the two plants meet only 34 per cent of the domestic demand for the fertiliser.

Two more urea fertiliser plants are also under construction in Ca Mau and Ninh Binh provinces. However, they are not expected to satisfy the country’s entire demand.

Under the chemical industry’s development plan until 2010, Viet Nam is forecast to consume around 2.7 million tonnes of urea fertiliser per year from 2006-20, and 3 million tonnes per year from 2010-2020 .

The Ministry of Industry said the Chinese enterprise should work with the Viet Nam Coal Cooperation to acquire coal for the plant. — VNS
