I entirely agree with you Monty regarding some of the emotive comment that has turned personal towards the people involved. I too, have been very disappointed about the increased comments of personal appearance, etc. I tend to just ignore those posts there will always be a certain number of cretins on any forum) and then go looking for the constructive and intelligent ones, of which there are still many.
I also hear what you are saying about approaching management directly firts, but I think the situation has gotten so serious (and inthe absence of any obvious action from the board) that the old shareholder activist approach will certianly do some good. It will have to be carefully and professionally handled however.
