"In China the bird flu strain H5N1 is showing around 70% resistance to adamantane drugs like Tamiflu."

I have heard this quote a few times, however it is clearly innacurate.

There are currently four flu drugs marketed to battle flu: amantadine and rimantadine, which are called adamantane drugs; and oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza), which are neuraminidase inhibitors.
ie. tamiflu is NOT an adamantane drug.

While I hold BTA, and I believe stockpiling needs to be weighted more towards Relenza, and the facts are clear for a major revaluation of Biota well above current levels, it is important to rely on facts, not inaccuracies.

Resistance of H5N1 to Tamiflu HAS occured, but not often, and certainly not 70%. Five percent would be an overestimate currently. Of course the danger is real that resistance will increase in a pandemic with overreliance on Tamiflu, especially as Tamiflu has been used in Asia for ordinary flu which has developed resistance genes.

    Just wanted to clarify things.
