    If you venture outside Australia and US you find that cash system is very much alive especially in Japan. I can only guess that in Japan the culture is; "you don't spend what you don't have" therefore credit is not used much. In Aus and US, you spend as much as the banks are prepared to lend. In fact the more the better because there is a saying in th ewestern world: "when you owe the bank $100k is your problem, when you owe the bank $100m is the bank's problem".
