I've been reading a very interesting book recently. Its called:

'The Next 100 Years" and its by George C Friedman.

This push to develop unconventional sources of gas is very rational. Russia is currently a big exporter of gas, and it uses that supply to exert pressure on mainland Europe. Other sources of gas such as from Australia help to lessen this tension.

The US doesn't want a strong Russia, and is seeking to disrupt its power in mainland Europe. A bigger deeper market for gas helps it do this.

I note also the development of a bigger spot market for gas too. Eventually it'll be like the oil market, long term supply contracts will be binned.
