I wouldn't join these dots. I already made this point a few weeks back but got flamed for the conjecture.

Shell wants/needs more exploration in Australia. It has to come from somewhere... and the Canning is touted as the basin with the largest unconventional gas potential Australia.

Canning is as good as any as a fit for Shell. To say that Shell isn't having a look at the Canning (not necessarily with Buru) is idiotic.

Time will tell, but they need to get there foot in the door in either the Cooper or the Canning (or both) if they want a long term future in Australia (in my opinion).
