Yes, rightly so, the angle of repose of the seaside wall gets its base closer to the strike zone the deeper we go.
2 years ago, it was the back wall on the northern side, opposite the seawall, that Peter Kerr decided to strip back from 75 degrees to 80 degrees angle of repose to gain access to the high grade strike that they are currently mining.
And yes, as you say, stripping back a lot of waste is (and was) an expensive endeavour.
This high grade strike is not on the seawall side.
The high grade strike runs for the entire length (around 2000 metres) and is about 30 metres wide. It is positioned at the very base, pressed hard up against the back wall (away from the sea).
Increasing the angle of repose by 5 degrees increased the foot print on the floor by 15 metres, giving access to the 30 metre wide high grade strike.
