Shiv-Vani seeks to develop UCG projects
Mrinalini Prasad
Shiv-Vani, an upstream oil and gas services company based in New Delhi, is keen to develop underground coal gasification (UCG) projects in India through coal blocks identified by the ministry of coal. The ministry has identified three blocks—Bankhui, Sakhigopal B and Alaknanda—for UGC projects. The company, in a letter to the ministry, said that it had the potential to take up UGC projects and set up a power plant to consume syngases produced therein. The company has urged the coal ministry to allocate it one of the three coal blocks. It has also informed the ministry of its tie-up with Linc Energy Ltd, Australia, which has commenced work on bringing together two proven production processes-underground coal gasification clean coal technology and coal-to-liquids technology. The company further informed that these processes had the potential to economically convert coal deposits into ultra clean liquid fuels. Linc Energy also has experience in using syngas as feedstock for gas turbines to generate electricity in an environment-friendly manner. According to the company, this expertise can be used in India. At present, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd has awarded Shiv-Vani a contract to develop the Charaideo oilfield near Lakwa in Assam. ONGC has also awarded the company a contract for hiring integrated services for the development of Central Parbatpur block and drilling, and completion and testing of pilot well in Jharia and Bokaro coal bed methane.
