We shop similar to you. No offense to others, but I 'feel faint' when I see people with over filling trolleys. If you live in the metro area unless you're extremely time poor or loath shopping with a passion I wouldn't do it, looks too hard! I respect some may be extremely organised and know what they're cooking 7 days in advance.
Towelettes and toilet paper I buy in 'extreme' bulk. I can at times buy enough to last 3 months. Same with dishwashing/clothes detergents, toothpaste, shower gel, tuna, baked beans etc. Products that are 'bomb shelter' grade. You do get a larger bill up front but it balances out with smaller bills for the other stuff.
Club_sharer is correct that sometimes bulk can cause you to over consume, namely those 'buy any 2' offers. They are freezable but the temptation is weak, very weak. Tonight I had an extremely hard choice. Damn ice creams. The offer virtually made one free, big saving. Which 2? Geared towards the wife, kids or myself. Kept it neutral, Giant Sandwich. Plus, it took up less freezer space, had the kid's 'buy 2' tempura nugget
    snacks to fit in lol
To avoid over consumption I pick the longest lead date. Many times I see specials with a short lead date but ALWAYS look behind, you'll find the ultra fresh product which obviously is a special also. I don't care if I have to take 10 packs of a hook(and put them back of course) to get mine. I mean products like bacon, cold meats, cheeses, dips, yoghurt, juice. Even meat.
Some products I avoid bulk which result from specials. I don't buy extremely perishable goods on their last day 'use by' date, like meat. Or goods past a 'best before' date that may be dodgy, like yoghurt, easy for that to turn rancid and culture some bad bacteria. Best to pay full price and keep your stomach.
Bulk is good if you give it some thought. Spur of the moment will lead to waste.
