    Again...you also missed it.
No not the wheelbarrow example...that was a first step in leading the horse to water to get the brains thinking. "I no longer have my wheelbarrow but I will get it back someday"

    But the question was...
HOW CAN IT FACILITATE A TAKEOVER?
The question was not about the specifics of the lending, someone answered the the above question effectively saying "It facilitates takeover because the shares are borrowed and not owned by the shorter"
Which is not the answer to the actual question that was asked.

Forget all the somple lending, borrowing etc...

    What happens to their vote?
If i lend or rent (he borrows or is renting) my concert ticket to someone do i still get a seat at the concert?

Who cares what he does with it (sell, hold, eat)
    Who holds the vote?
How does shorting FACILITATE A TAKEOVER?

(and yes lower price is the answer but there are 75million sgares to be bought for thise people to gave a say)

So for the shorter themselves it probably does not facilitate a takeover...from a 3rd party it would due to a bargain price.

Shorts and takeover are not necessarioy connected IMO.
