I loan you a share and you pay me interest while you hold the share.
You sell the share in the hope the price will go down. If it does, you buy the share back at a cheaper price and keep the margin (profit) and return the share you just purchased back to me. My shareholding hasn't changed.
Or maybe you sell the share at more that you sold it for and buy it back at a higher price, in which case you lost money. But you still return the share you brought back to me. My shareholding hasn't changed.
