    Shorters are no different to retail investors that go long- except that most shorters do a lot more research before taking a position, and don't forget most of the larger investment houses go long and short on the same stock at different prices and times.
    The Australian government tried, through the ASX, to ban shorting during the GFC- the ban didn't last long as shorters are too important to the market.
    As you say, shorters often reduce prices and increase liquidity- creating buying opportunities for investors that go long, have patience, and understand a company's fundamentals.
