@rockofgib, you are correct that losses are theoretically unlimited, BUT, there are tens of thousands of funds and traders who trade futures and currencies, where the losses are also unlimited.
If you do a little research you will see how common it is for funds and traders to short stocks. Tesla was one of the heaviest shorted stocks in the USA, when the market failed to realise its real potential. Surely you would have heard about the recent Robinhood squeezing shorts in AMC and GME?? Google gamestop!!
Flight centre currently has 10% of its stock shorted. Check out MP1. They HAD 8% short and then earning came out and look what happened to shorts!!
