Yes they can do that, or to someone else. However usually more a case of working the book with algos. One tell tale sign is how it behaves when it's pushed up. How aggressively do they stomp on it? It really depends how much they need to cover, which is generally unknown unless you have a fair idea from broker data or who's obtained a decent amount via sub notice to the market. There's some tell tale signs when you know which funds/brokers do what and how they tend to act on other names historically. Also as I've explained before, when WBT became ASX300 inclusion then it forced many to buy up, so there's plenty to lend out for borrow now it's 300 incl.
