It's not an assumption mate look at my previous post where I provided evidence for this (ie they lost $200 billion last year).
Why do they keep it up? Well why do gamblers gamble and why do day traders trade when they know (based on the data) they are most likely going to lose? Because they're risk seeking... Can't assume people are rational, there often not.
