Shorts play an important role in the market IMO. If share prices were left unchecked they would be prone to greater manipulation, and far more investors would lose money IMO. Shorts can prevent excessive company valuations, it's simply the inverse of investors hunting down bargains that have been oversold.
Activist short selling campaigns are not always correct, but very often they are indeed. Without the shorts companies such as Wirecard, Theranos, Enron and Herbalife would likely still be thriving, along with many others popping up.
