You are not doing anything wrong. What you are missing is that the reported shorts dropped by 400K the day before your increase of 321K.
These odd movements are simply artefacts of a deficient reporting system that is run by ASIC and which they fail to police adequately. ASIC’s own reports have disclaimers that tell you not to trust them.
