The ramp-up of shorts from September(ish) 2023 largely coincided with the addition of WBT to ASX200, although shorts haven't dropped since WBT was removed from ASX200 in March 2024.
In my view it is likely that WBT will be removed from ASX300 in September this year. Any confirmation of this will be announced after close of business on Friday 6 September 2024 and I would expect it to trigger a material reduction in shorts.
This may not have a great positive effect on the share price however because the shorts may exit by buying shares from index funds which no longer are required to hold them, rather than buying on market.
