If you look at the graph it shows a large decrease followed by a equally large increase a few days later. Almost as if they they gave them back to one lender and borrowed them a few days later from someone else.
I don't think the liability is by holding the shares. If you borrow them and give them back at any other price you don't lose or gain. Only if you sell and have to buy back are in in the game.
