If the recent round of shorting was just one player then they did indeed lose a lot of cash especially when they doubled down after the Skywater deal announcement and then got caught with their pants down with the 28nm announcement.
There really is no way you can debate that with the prices they started at and the timelines that was happening to when they closed them out with share prices well above those positions.
Now the recent daily ones we have seen probably have been making $$$ from it and overall shorters usually do well, just not last round the post here.
