there is a fundamental difference between longs and shorts. Longs actually buy something, hold it and then may sell. Shorts first sell something they don't own, they borrow. And in naked shorts they don't even borrow! Perhaps wouldn't be so bad if (some) shorts left the market to digest market impacting news without feeding negative stories to encourage SP falls. Regulators seem ineffective in managing that. I've heard all the stuff about shorting improving market liquidity etc, but who in their right mind can support the concept of naked short selling in a legitimate market?
