I see your point. As someone who holds I hope that is the case and we have hit the peak short volume and there is an exit from those positions that drives the demand side of the ledger. Unfortunately for those that hold there is no certainty about that and it could get larger or simply the position reduce if fundamentals drive holders out of the stock and the shorts use the volume to exit and return stock to the lender. The thesis that exits by shorts will drive up price is predicated by the assumption that other parties will not exit their long positions concurrently.
