Total trade volume yesterday was 9,791,317.
Friday was 6,138,221.
Thursday was 13,063,960.
My thinking on the sequence of events is that it looked like someone started selling a reasonable number on Thursday (the shorts were only 1/4 of the total volume, so there was quite a bit of other selling and what we've heard from other sources is that someone was in fact selling out a decent size parcel), the buy volume was weak and the price started to move south; the shorts increased their efforts as the weak buying continued and this caused the price to collapse even further (potentially causing stops to get triggered). Friday they had another go at it with 1/2 the volume sold (a lot less other selling). Yesterday they continued with 1/3 of the total volume. Today my guess would be there are a lot less shorts being sold today, potential a lot more real buying, and potentially some covering going on.
