Hedging is simply having both a long and an opposing short position open at the same time. If both positions are of equal size(shares) then price can move in either direction without any change in capital, paper or otherwise. This is because what one position looses the other will gain; equal and opposite. The purpose is to limit any risk with upcoming events, hence the saying "Hedging your bets".
