Hindmost - I think short selling is super important. I could never agree - I think it should be mandatory for little speccie shares as well, where there is very little market attention placed. A reward for the vigilant. Every time short selling has been banned it has been because of a shortcoming of the leadership - like in Europe when they banned shorting of the banks. The shorters of those banks did the public a great service, as they were severely mispriced, and Mums and Dads were buying them at ten times whet they were worth, because the politicians were releasing misleading statements about their banks.
It will be a dark day for the markets if short selling is ever banned. They should ban longing shares as well if they do that, and close the market, rather than having no checks and balances on large stocks.
