In the past week, I have had a really good look at BRU and agree with you that the fundamentals are very strong and it would be very difficult to understand why a short position would be taken.
Therefore, technically is where the opportunities must be coming from.. One reason is the speed at which it rose to over $2, some traders saw an opportunity to grab a quick short trade and were rewarded with a quick 10%. Risky stuff but profitable if your up for it.

Poster Final put a charming spin on shorting activity inferring that BRU's dramatic fall in SP is due to shorters. What crap!
BRU was so over bought and rediculously over valued to ever reach levels over $3 it was pretty simple as to where the SP was going and the shorts would have their day in the sun.
So the longs had their fun, (hope you all sold) and it was then the shorts turn.

There are some massive positive developments that could happen in the upcoming 24 months and also some massive risks that could foil well laid out plans. Expect the unexpected.
