pretty sure can't see the buybacks. a full broking firm may only manage to see their own shorts and covers.. don't think they can see other firms'.. unless they share the same platform.. thats why every participating brokers have to submit to asx/asic EOD to declare their hands.. however, still its not fully transparent process..
eg.
xxx firm short sells 100,000 shares (100 sell contracts; 1000 shares ea) when market opens. they managed to buyback 80,000 shares (200 buy contracts; 400 shares ea) before close. therefore, only need to report 20,000 to asx/asic EOD. i stand corrected..
that's why i kept saying buy and turn it into free carry since the big boys are taking advantage of liquidity, overdue assays and Mali noise
