I couldn't tell you what is in it for the lender, but I do believe there is a short sellers lenders fee that they are given.

I know if the short seller still has an open trade when the company issues dividends, the short seller needs to personally pay this to the original holder.

I think short selling timeline can range from 1 day to 12 months. Not sure on that though, so it might be wrong.
