In order to understand how it works you need to just clear your mind of market manipulation for a few moments. I usually throw my orders in last minute or so as well, reason being is then it is too late for someone to jump in front.
I only do it with a stock that I want rid off at the end of day, I do not do it with all trades. Risk is pretty low as you can see the volume but yes there is a slight risk that a giant will jump in last second with a dump but thems the breaks.
