Robots like to do the 1 unit trades. There are 2 reasons that appear to me:
1. To make the price appear higher/lower.
2. To incur your brokerage fee in full, for only a 1 unit fill, so you feel more motivated to increase your bid to get a full fill. So if they were a seller, then they might sell 1 unit to you at $1.69 in the hopes that you'll up your buy to $1.70.
