I think this is one option. It was especially convincing leading into the last rebalancing.
But the next balancing is still a couple of months away, and there are several company-shifting announcements in the meantime (e.g. ED, Booth, Export decision, power plant permit, Walyering 7 results), so speculating this early on an ASX 200 exit is a very risky strategy.
You may be right, but I don't think it explains why STX is one of the most "shorted" stocks on the ASX, and creeping up daily (who is so willing to keep supply this stock?)
As I 've said before, I see the increasing "short" sale data as a proxy for increasing holdings of a potential acquirer (most likely Gina, given the Australian article).
