Am I correct in saying the protests are solely to stop the waste being buried in Malaysia, not stop the LAMP?
In the first year of production at 11,000tpa, I estimate the LAMP waste will be ~70,000t. This isn't that much and could fit on a moderate size freighter and cost only a few million dollars to ship. The biggest ships can carry up to 365,000t. So if the waste cannot be stored in Malaysia, shipping costs won't be a factor and given the world demand for REEs, surely it won't be that hard to find somewhere else for the low radioactive waste. Someone also mentioned in another post that the company that previously owned Mt Weld had plans approved to bury the waste at Mt Weld.
Figures above are very rough, so please feel free to correct anything I've said :)
