Microsoft's marketing of Majorana did seem like it was hitting all the right media spots but has now come down to earth.
The big headline was - "A new state of matter"
at the nano level of materials science and engineering AXE can also claim to have created a new state of matter with its carbon nano onions and then again with carbon quantum films. Anyone who plays around with materials down to sub atomic particles is going to create new matter. This is what nano engineering is, hello!
Microsoft then revised their news by dropping the implication that they had created a new state in addition to solid, liquid, gas states of matter.
there are further fundamental physics questions that have arisen when the Majorana fermion is supposed to have both particle and anti particle, which would then annihilate each other and not exist. Let's just say, science and tech people are having to correct all the initial hype.
Microsoft's composite nanowire whatsits also needs temps colder than outer space to begin behaving like new matter, let alone getting control and read out happening.( Control is done just like AXE does with microwave pulses). So yes, we are talking a big fridge. Only thing Microsoft hopes to do differently is engineer a million physical qubits of reasonable quality all on one chip in one fridge. Rather than having to daisy chain and network several fridges holding one chip each with smaller numbers of physical qubits.
so let's re cap AXE and its quantum endeavours - the only listed company on the ASX that has a good shot at making next generation semiconductors leveraging quantum mechanical properties.
a stable isotope of Carbon that offers high quality qubits that maintain state for long enough times at room temperature - robust enough to start designing logic gates and circuits and a quantum processor
an option to use spin direction as a standalone spintronics device
an option to use spin aligned and sensitive to tiny magnetic fluctuations
an option to use coulomb blockade and electron charge in specific ways - use less power, generate less heat
an option to use BOTH charge and spin to further amplify signal in some use cases - might be possible to use this ability to amplify weak signals from the gFET biochip sensors as well. This in turn could make a wider range of analytes detectable in a more reliable way outside the lab.
