Primary synthetic graphite has multiple advantages over SPG flake graphite as morphologies can be modified to meet specific performance metrics, BET can be modified with or without post coating processing, and PSD management can be completed to any specific target axis. Also, contrary to common belief, it is NOT expensive to produce primary synthetic graphite either iso-moulded or powder. It is a talking point used by potential natural flake graphite producers to compare flake graphite processing to primary synthetic graphite production.

There are many primary synthetic graphite anode grades such as SGL - MAG Grades and IMERYS SLP Grades. Hitachi has been using MAG for many years and A123 has been using SLP Grades for almost as long. SPG flake graphite has one morphology post processing and its use is not 100% in any one battery format as there blends with other synthetic anode grades to achieve target energy densities or cycling performance metrics. SPG flake graphite will NOT work in every battery chemistry to meet application performance targets. EV is not the only battery application as SPG flake graphite is also used in moderation in consumer goods, industrial, defence, electronics, and aerospace.

As a side note, all the publicly released CONFIDENTAL IP on any battery grade product produced in the lab by an publicly traded company is not only foolish, but also gives competition performance data information that any competitor will gladly add to its database. If you look at all of the battery grade products currently produced by existing operations or processors, they NEVER publish their performance data, yet alone any TDS information. A hard lesson for many new starts.
