I had the same discussion with ANZ where I was beaten by trades that went through on Chi-X that weren't Cross Trades.

They tried to tell me cross trades first then ended up telling me, after a few emails, that when you first place an order it does a sweep passed the Chi-X system and if the order can be matched (filled) then it will be, if not it will fall to the ASX system where if still not filled will stay in the ASX queue and not be referred to the Chi-X again.

I was being beaten to buy trades on open where I had placed my order early before most others, and have watched others at the same price then being filled around my order via Chi-X, while my order sat in the queue and wouldn't get taken due to all the sell orders at that time going through on Chi-X and not ASX. I guess that some brokers are able to choose to put their orders in through Chi-X only if it has a better depth especially at times such as open or when trying to beat others to a trade.
