@CaptainGrumpy was good enough to actually document his strategy with the put options. An advanced search will dig them up. Aside from the massive potential payoffs that come from hedging tail risk, options are far cheaper than ETFs to hedge equivalent portfolio values. The most you can lose is your initial outlay too, which puts them above unleveraged CFDs and certainly regular ones.
Agree that some options strategies can get very complex and not ideal for most retail investors but simple bought (long) puts & calls are easy to understand and execute. To get access to liquidity, you'd just need access to a broker that provides o/s options markets, so Saxo, IB etc
