Hey Golden boy, Yep I'm a far North Queenslander...and yes Cairns is paradise, and a playground of swimming, diving and snorkelling ( and sweat) But if you are interested in History, head up through Carnarvon Gorge in Central Queensland..home of the most stunning Aboriginal art gallery.. Up through the golden city Charters Towers, then inland and up near Mt Surprise is the fantastic ancient volcanic landscape of Undara...deep history there. Further North on the coast there's the Art Deco sugar town of Innisfail and inland from there the rather bizarre folly that is Paronella park. Then inland and North through the beautiful lush Atherton tablelands. Home of the curtain fig tree and serene volcanic lakes, and a more temperate climate. Kuranda is worth a few days, just to be there when the tourists are not, walk the river and the Jum Rum creek board work, you can stop on the way and peer over the fence at the Bat reach flying fox rescue, a few kms west of Kuranda is the local's secret swimming spot of Davis creek. You can drive North west from Kuranda and head through Mt Molloy and down the Rex to Mossman and Port Douglas. Mossman Gorge is run by the local Aboriginal CoOp and you can join a dreamtime tour there. The Laura dance festival in on in the first week of July. maybe you should stay a month at least. Enjoy
