My case from 30 years ago similar to yours - kids are more important than ex-wife and money.
I gave her everything - kids (with some access) and all our assets and paid a nominal maintenance.
I could always work and earn money.
Told the kids, Dad will pay all your private school fees as long as you keep passing, right through uni.
All grown up, high level jobs and earn great salaries, have their own families, and I can't shake them off (like s## to a blanket).
Looking back, no lawyers and a good result.
Kids shouldn't have to suffer by my poor decision making.
I enentually married again, but more cautiously next time round.
