I remember a trout fishing trip to Tarana/Fish River, west of Sydney, early 1980's, bad drought, low water in Fish River but heaps of platypus could be seen towards dusk. Our presence didn't seem to bother them. A highlight of that trip was my long haired bearded Italian mate casting a black celta and hooking up on a small bush on the other side of the water. Pulling it free, it ricocheted back and hooked up in his ear lobe. We wanted a photo but he ripped it out before I could get my manual film camera. We thought he looked like a pirate.
Years later (maybe mid 1990's) on the Lachlan River near Bigga, near Crookwell, again saw platypus. There were also huge schools of carp, but not many trout.
Also, Retreat River, not much water but platypus were seen.
