They aren't, the main reason people upgrade is to play the latest games at good details. I had a 780ti and it was able to play some games at 4k but doom 2016 didn't want to run higher than 20fps so I just got a 1080. Funny enough the cpu's haven't upgraded enough over the years to warrant an upgrade (if you were solely looking at that part).
