Instilling a new habit,
I look at from a neurological point of view.
The brain has pathways, like little road maps.
You must instill the habit ( pathway ) by
repetition over a period of time.
The opposite is true with addiction.
That's why I always say to people,
Start slow but maintain!
You are better off doing ten push-ups
every second day, but Forever.
Than doing twenty every day,
Only to stop after two weeks.
So the key to me is to set an ultra acheivable goal,
And of the upmost importance is to maintain it.
I think I've heard it said 30 days is the minimum
to instill a new habit into the brain waves.
The more you can qualify the reasons for the endeavor,
The stronger the outcome will be imo.
Like if you are doing it because the wife is nagging,
or to impress or please someone else then I beleive the longevity
will not be there.
However if you can find and really feel the emotion of the goal,
For example,
" My beautiful son / daughter / wife will be without their father
if I don't........"
or just get so sick and tired of being sick and tired.
We either change through choice or suffering,
The decision is ours
