I heard a story about this group on the radio station I listen to. When Garbage were formed couldn't get a record contract or any time on radio. With a first album named Garbage by artist Garbage I can't imagine why. A Triple J radio presenter heard their demo tape and started playing tracks on air. The songs were liked and shortly after they were signed on by Mushroom Records, an Australian record company and the rest is history.
The Garbage Wikipedia site tells a different story but the Triple J Wikipedia site gives the station credit for their popularity.
