"How is this possible when there is an avalanche of selling the moment it begins to gain traction?"

As far as I can make out this is because there are now a lot of short term traders holding this one, and all they are in for is a quick buck. Once they have been stopped out, made their money, or moved on because there is little price movement this will be an issue.

If something spooks them and it turns into a feeding frenzy as they turn and prey on each other go along for the ride, what else can you do.
