I'm no expert on this but you do have to be careful when interpreting the daily short numbers. From on memory it covers the net short reported position for the day - from what I have seen from UBS reporting these players are effectively trading the stock so short movement could be a lot larger in terms of volume in any one day.
I have noted that a common tactic before these such sustained falls is for the bid volume disappear and the sell to be hit with sustained small orders. All too often not to be a trading strategy from a large player aka UBS. From what I understand they play this game with a number of stock - and is predictable to the extent that some watch for them on the register and Avoid accordingly.
Up until recently I didn't believe such blatant manipulation was possible - but I'm afraid to say this does seem to be happening here.
time will tell (tomorrow) if there was any information signal to this volume or just the big boy shorts shaking the tree in the name of profits!
