Banks acting for PE or other parties acquired massive amounts of stock at the bottom. They're lending it out to shorters (or to each other) to cap the SP so it doesn't run away before the due diligence is completed.

Only rational reason for the shorters increasing through the rally. If they did know something, a LOT of other people would know it too. The volumes and money at stake are just too large for one or two insiders to be playing the stock.

Of course, there could be another profit downgrade in which case we're all f'd in the short term.
