Well, "stopping the boats" certainly helps the budget bottom line. I know that the bleeding hearts, Greens and other vested interests in the "asylum seeker industry" don't like it very much, but I certainly feel a bit better when our borders are secure and we know who it is that is coming in.
As for coal, I very much doubt that this government, or any other for that matter, has much control over world energy demands or commodity prices. That's why Australia needs to move towards "value adding" industry, high tech, health, education and business development.
Not sure that helps the CFMEU or the AWU very much, but that's the way of the future.
