Ever since the GST was introduced there is nobody who pays no tax at all. I think the tax debate needs to be widened to include all taxes, charges and duties. For example people who drink alcohol and smoke tobacco pay massive amounts of tax. When you fuel your car you pay a lot of tax. And then there is stamp duty on many things you buy and sell.
It seems to me that everyone just accepts all these other taxes and the sore point is income tax.
So why not do away with it by replacing it with some other hidden tax? I have suggested a financial transaction tax on every transaction to be collected automatically by the banks, and research I have seen indicates that a 2% tax on every transaction would raise enough to eliminate income tax.
