Labor has pledged to support any push for Australia to become a republic, but has dismissed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's suggestion of a plebiscite on the model as 'flippant.' On Monday, Malcolm Turnbull suggested holding a plebiscite on the republic model. However Labor says the government should be more concerned about ascertaining whether there is popular support for a republic rather than engaging in a debate on the model. Mr Thistlethwaite has told Sky News that the Prime Minister should come up with a viable plan that can be adopted by both sides of the political aisle.
